Fashion Focus: Mesh

a history of mesh in the fashion world

Fashion Focus: Mesh

We're familiar with 'mesh' as the material on the back four panels of our Farm trucker caps, but the history of the mesh material goes way back.

History: "The history of mesh fabric can be traced back to 1888, when a British mill owner bore into product the concept of a clean and breathable material that could withstand temperature changes.  When wet or dry, the material has great crocking values (which simply means that the dyes will not rub off)." "‘Mesh’ itself refers to a knitted structure of fibers and is technically a barrier created from connected strands. The yarns are knitted or woven together, resulting in a fabric with open spaces in between the strands of yarn. Mesh isn’t only used for fashion fabrics, and can be made from a huge range of materials depending on its intended use – it isn’t limited to fabrics for textiles." (source)

In the fashion realm, mesh has definitely had its time in the '80s,'90s, 00's and continues to make a comeback today. We've seen it in sneakers, on celebrities, and especially on the runway. My personal favorite look is one from the Céline at Paris Fashion Week Spring 2013 (pictured below.) I like the illusion that mesh create when worn on the body, it sort of has this great movement and messes with your eyes a little bit. Plus, if you know me, you know I'm a big fan of mixing textures, and mesh does just that.
