Placement: This entirely depends on your style preference but also the stiffness of the hat itself. If the hat is fairly relaxed, pins are easy to place anywhere- brim, crown, hat band. If your hat is on the stiffer side, sometimes you are limited to just the hat band. Be conscious of the pin-backing when placing your pins, you do not want to have the backing hitting your head uncomfortably inside the crown.

Process: I usually begin with what pins I know I want to include and if I want them spread out around the hat or all together and clustered creating its own unique design. I like putting pins in the front crown of the hat so people can see it when I wear it, especially if its just peeking out ever so slightly. I usually arrange pins in the ribbon hat bands on my stiffer hats and throw in some easy feathers for some added design.

Permanence: Putting pins in your hat is considered a semi-permanent personalization. Pin-holes in the crown are generally easy to hide as opposed to holes in the hat band. I think of it as getting scuffs in suede boots, using the right brush you can generally get the fabric to lay over the holes making them disappear for the most part. Holes in ribbon or leather tend to stay more noticeably.

General recommendation is to place pins where you know you’ll want them to stay put. Sounds scary but its such an easy and creative way to spice up one of your hats old or new. Check out all our available hat accessories here!
