presents the SKINNY DIPPIN 2 Capsule

From The Design Team: Life Of Leisure

Our latest Farm Capsule has dropped and it's one of our favorites to date. The colors, patterns, materials, and detailing really make this one a splash. We got a chance to talk with Farm Designer, !Michael Koester about his design process, and inspiration behind the design: check it out below!

Q: How did this ‘SKINNY DIPPIN 2’ capsule idea come to be?

A: Last summer we did a really quick “Skinny Dippin’” capsule. It was 5 styles, aquatic patches, bright colors, and it was a “blink and you’ll miss it capsule” they came and went in an hour or something. As a big movie buff, I think it’s always a fun idea to make “sequel” capsules when something is a clear success. Take the same ideas but make it bigger, better, and “up the spectacle” so with that capsule barely having any time to breathe, it felt fitting to do a sequel to it that really drove home what made it fun. The aquatic patches, the bright colors, and really the Life of Leisure vibe. Which is a piece of the Goorin legacy we get to revive.

Q: What are some interesting details about these styles that set them apart from previous capsules we’ve made?

A: There’s a few things here. The obvious is the front panel printing which essentially combines the whole color palette into a full on “HELLO SUMMER!” situation, then there’s the laurel scrambled eggs on the brim, there’s a cute little underbrim script, and the Goorin Life of Leisure logo embroidered on the back panel.Q: Where did you find inspiration for the artwork and font?

A: This pattern has actually been showing up a lot in some designs. Initially it was used on some bucket hats that never really saw much action. That was a duskier, junglier color palette, but when it came time to put these together the tropical vibe was evident, so we recolored it and revitalized it. Obviously it’s a meant to evoke a little bit of beach life, but really I think it’s supposed to feel a little more like those oversaturated novelty shirts you can get to be obnoxious at a pool party. Palm trees were not in the picture for these, really.Q: What is your favorite stylistic feature of this capsule?

A: Honestly it’s the material look and feel. We’re using a material on these that we’ve previously only reserved for styles with artwork printing (Bomb Pup, Hyperspeed, etc) but the nature of this fabric is that the colors are super vibrant and it feels a lot like a swim suit. Plus these were designed with minimal stitching on the brims so you get a lot of feel estate. I also love an underbrim message. This is something we’ve seen a couple times before, but it’s not going anywhere. The underbrim is one of the best places for secret nonsense. ALSO, though, I do wanna point out the patch choices too. Originally, there were 6 styles: Two patches from last summer’s Fish Bowl capsule, Two patches from the previous Skinny Dippin’ capsule, and two new patches. We kept the fishies, and kept the newbies, but upon some reflection and PLENTY of suggestion, we swapped out the Skinny Dippin’ patch for a much-need resurrection of our CRABBY patch.

Q: What does ‘Life of Leisure’ mean to you?

A: This is a good question because I don’t like the beach or pools or anything, really. I like to swim, but I’m a “swimmin’ hole” type person. To me, though, Life of Leisure basically means doing what you want to do without the anxiety of knowing there’s something you SHOULD do instead. Like, a guiltless day without pants, or staying in bed until 1pm on your phone. Or that feeling you get when someone cancels plans and suddenly you just have a night in. Or designing Friday Drops. It doesn’t mean VACATION to me, it means “Vacation from obligations."
