Block Series: No.18

While a relative newbie to the Goorin Core Block family, if you’re overlooking the styles in Block No.18, then we need to talk.

Block Series: No.18 - Goorin Bros.

Block No.18 was first introduced with the Night Hawk, a fedora that has quickly become a fan favorite and is a true workhorse fedora in my book.   The Night Hawk has the proportions and the finish to be your go-to everyday hat.  When client's ask me for something to go from office to the bar afterwards, this is my recommendation.  It’s just dressy and refined enough to hang with a nicely tailored outfit, but rugged enough to pair perfectly with jeans and t-shirt.  It comes with a no-contrast minimalist band- if you’re looking for a solid color hat, then this is the one.  A client once said it best “This hat doesn’t try too hard”

Where the Night Hawk and Block No.18 as a whole stand out is the unique proportion of crown height to brim width.  While it is the same 4inch crown as a few of our other popular Blocks, the 2 ¾ raw edge brim width give this hat extra width that lends the crown a low profile look, making it an ideal choice for clients who don’t want all the height up top.  It’s been blocked with a shallow teardrop shape, and that produces a not-too-deep and not-too-wide yet not-too-narrow crown that can ft a variety of head shapes.  We’ve generally found that it works best with round and oval head shapes.

The 2 ¾ brim width qualifies as the beginning of our wide brims, so you get some nice width to go with a full snap-brim.  In fact, if you’re reading this and own a Dean the Butcher, you might want to consider the Night Hawk as your next hat, as it’s in proportions familiar to you but just a little wider side to side on the brim, without any added height up top.

We’ve given the merino wool body a medium stiffness, so it should feel comfortable on your head right out of the box, but along with the inner leather sweatband, has enough structure to hold the brim and body in good shape for a long while.  The wool has a very soft touch to the hand and is lightweight in the palm of your hand.

If you’re looking for to try a wide brim for the first time, or are looking for that true everyday workhorse fedora, consider the Night Hawk and Block No.18.   It hits the sweet spot of proportions.  This is a Block that is creating its’ loyalists.
