From The Community: NYFW Interview With Ilbert J. Sanchez

During NYFW '21 we got the chance to sit (virtually) with some creatives within the fashion community. We closed out the week with a 1:1 with Ilbert J Sanchez of Garcon Couture:

Q: How did your career in fashion begin?
A: 2010, 11 – I went to FIT for undergrad. That’s when I started to dabble into fabrics and streetwear, and was heavy into streetwear for about 3-4 years.
.
The power in fashion is there are things that are trendy and then there are things that stay a long time, and fine menswear was something that’s timeless. Someones always gonna need a tuxedo, a suit for so many occasions.
.
In high school my teacher told me, 'Dress for success,' and I felt much more grounded with menswear looks.

Q: Have you always loved hats? /  A:  I revert back to high school so much because that’s when I had the transition of understanding who I really was as far as being a Black man in the South Bronx of New York, so I used to always wear fitted hats with the Yankees or Knicks logos, but I started to really understand hatting with my business partner Gilly who introduced me to Goorin Bros.

Q: Why is style so important? / A: Self-Expression is one of the biggest pieces to who you really are and sometimes we hesitate on expressing who we are from outside. For me, I always have dressed how I’ve felt. You feel the most yourself when you can dress with no limitations.
