Let's talk cold weather! Growing up in New York State, and having lived in Chicago for a number of years before settling in Nashville, I am definitely familiar with the cold. What has always been the struggle with living in places where cold weather is very much a thing, is how to express your sense of style while also trying to keep warm. Enter knits: we're talking beanies and berets.
With knits we generally think of straight up functionality. As in, let me keep my head warm and dry from the elements. If I think back to walking to the train everyday in Chicago, it looked like a sea of long puffy black coats and beanies. I'm here to tell you that you can 100% keep warm, while still giving an element of style to your outerwear look.
On the other-hand, I also have been loving incorporating "typically functional" hats with more fashionable outfitting. For example, throwing on a beanie as part of a stylish outfit out to a restaurant or hosting people for drinks at home. I like that its unassuming, especially since beanies have a tendency to scream casual -- let the beanies be fashion forward too!
Up first we have outdoor function based looks with knits. With the beanie, I knew I wanted to pull in that brighter color so I added a Pendelton coat that has some stripes with primary colors across the chest. For the beret look, I kept the outfit neutral but incorporated a muted earth tone beret to offset the taupe. Nashville rarely gets snow, but when it does the entire city basically doesn't know what to do with themselves. I bundled up and went out for walks over the snow days feeling both stylish and warm. 
Now let us bring the outdoor hats inside with some fashion forward outfitting. First up was the beanie, and I wanted to bring in some other textures to off-set the ribbed material on the hat. I opted for a silk and ruffle top with a velvet and embroidered jacket. Often, I think the most intentional outfit comes from mixing unlikely items together. Hence the velvet, silk and ruffle with the beanie! It really forces the look together as an entire outfit as opposed to the "why haven't you taken off your hat yet?"
Similarly, with the beret look, I wanted to include items that wouldn't "normally go together," to create interest and dimension. I love putting on some cowboy boots with a beret because it instantly makes the beret feel "less French (or forced!)" and simultaneously makes the cowboy boots feel "less western (or forced)."
The best part about style is that it is uniquely yours. Even if someone has the same hat you have, or likes wearing the same outfits as you, it is all about how you choose to wear it.
